Why pores look open, and what can change
A pore is the opening of a hair follicle with an oil gland attached. You cannot close it or remove it, and anything that promises to is overselling. What makes pores look larger is usually one of three things:
- Oil: heavy sebum stretches the opening and makes it shine, which is why pores look biggest on the nose, forehead and inner cheeks.
- Clogging: dead skin and oil packed into the pore turn dark at the surface as blackheads, and a filled pore looks bigger than an empty one.
