Sunscreen for babies and children
Tuco Kids SPF 30, 30g at ৳720 is the kids-specific option currently in stock. Two things worth knowing before buying any of them: sunscreen is generally not recommended for babies under six months, who should be kept out of direct sun and covered instead, and for older children mineral filters are the common choice. What SPF and PA actually mean
SPF measures UVB protection, the radiation mainly responsible for sunburn. The number describes how much longer protected skin takes to redden compared with bare skin, under laboratory conditions using a thick, even layer almost nobody applies in real life. PA measures UVA protection, the radiation associated with tanning, pigmentation and long-term skin ageing. It runs from PA+ to PA++++, and in Bangladesh, where pigmentation and melasma are the reasons most people start wearing sunscreen at all, the PA rating matters at least as much as the SPF number. A tube with a big SPF and no PA rating is only telling you half the story. Two things follow, and they are the ones worth carrying out of this guide:
- Above SPF 50, the number stops meaning much. SPF 30 filters roughly 97% of UVB and SPF 50 roughly 98%. Several regulators cap what a label may claim at “50+” for exactly that reason. So a tube marked SPF 60, SPF 70 or SPF 90 is not offering double the protection of an SPF 50; the honest reading is “a high-SPF sunscreen”. - Broad spectrum is the phrase to look for. It means the product is tested against both UVA and UVB. On this page, any product stating both an SPF and a PA rating is telling you it covers both.
The amount nobody applies
SPF ratings are measured at 2 mg of product per square centimetre of skin. For an adult face and neck that is roughly a quarter teaspoon, or two full finger-lengths of product squeezed onto your index and middle fingers. Most people apply between a quarter and half of that, and a sunscreen applied at half the tested thickness does not deliver half the SPF; it delivers considerably less. This is why the price-per-gram column above is the practical one. A ৳499 tube you apply properly protects you; a ৳2,890 tube you spread thin to make it last does not. If a tube lasts you six months, you are almost certainly under-applying.
Reapplication in Bangladesh weather
Every two hours outdoors is the standard guidance, and sooner after heavy sweating, swimming, or wiping your face. In Dhaka heat that is not optional advice: sweat lifts sunscreen off the skin.
