First, work out which kind of hair fall you have
Three different problems get called hair fall, and an oil is the right answer to only one of them.
- Breakage. Hair snapping along its length, short broken pieces on the pillow, split ends, worse after colouring, heat or rough brushing. Oils genuinely help here.
- Shedding. Whole hairs with a small white bulb at the end, coming out in handfuls, often starting two to three months after illness, childbirth, crash dieting or a stressful stretch. This is telogen effluvium and it usually settles on its own within six to nine months.

A quick check: if the hairs on your pillow are short and snapped, that is breakage. If they are full length with a pale bulb at the root, that is shedding.

A 2015 study compared rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil over six months in men with pattern hair loss and found comparable improvement, with less scalp itching in the rosemary group. It was a single small trial, and one study is not a settled answer, but it is enough to make rosemary the sensible default.

The one people ask for by name in Bangladesh. The evidence for onion is thinner than the marketing suggests: one small trial used raw onion juice on alopecia areata, which is a different condition from pattern loss, and a formulated oil contains far less onion than that study used.

3. PLIX Hibiscus Bond Repair Advanced Hair Oil, 100 ml — ৳820

4. Sesa Rosemary Essential Oil, 15 ml — ৳490
The cheapest bottle here, and the one most likely to be misused. This is a concentrate, not a ready-to-use hair oil. Essential oils go on the scalp diluted in a carrier, a few drops in a tablespoon of coconut or almond oil, never neat, or you risk irritating the scalp you are trying to look after.

The oil that went viral online, imported from the USA. At ৳41 per millilitre it costs roughly nine times what the Mamaearth rosemary oil costs per millilitre, for the same headline ingredient. The formula is pleasant and the mint gives a cooling tingle that people like.

How to oil your hair so it actually helps
- Before washing, not after. Thirty to sixty minutes ahead of shampoo is enough. Oil left in for days collects dust and feeds the yeast involved in dandruff.
- Warm it slightly and part the hair in sections so the oil reaches the scalp rather than sitting on the top layer.
- Massage for about four minutes. A small Japanese study found daily scalp massage of roughly that length increased hair thickness over six months. The massage may be doing as much work as the oil.
- Work the rest down the lengths, where breakage actually happens, and pay attention to the last few inches.
- Do not rub hair dry or comb it hard while wet. Wet hair breaks most easily, and that undoes the point of oiling.
- Skip overnight oiling if you flake. It reliably makes dandruff worse.
- Give it three months. Less breakage shows up long before any change in density.
What an oil cannot fix
If your hair fall is sudden and diffuse, check iron and thyroid with a doctor before spending more on topical products.
